There are times I feel like I'm dead... but no I'm still around.

I've not completely given up on my desire to play the guitar, but I just finished my doctorate degree while working full time and trying to provide some semblance of encouragement and support for my life long role as 'Dad'

blah blah. Well, here it is August 2008 and I've had the L&M guitar course since Dec 2007 and aside from my initial burst during a break from studies, I've not been able to actually do anything else with the DVD's. But that's soon going to change.

I've recently purchased Cubase 4 and have that installed on my PC, it's working beautifully and I'm very happy with it. Some older VST pluggins have some bugs that have caused the program to crash (Applied Acoustics Lounge Lizard EP-3) but it works beautifully with most and my hardware synths.

I started the ASK Video tutorial DVD's as well to try and get the best from Cubase 4. The first one is about setting it up... and I can say it's very helpful if you don't know Cubase. I'm interested in getting my hardware interfaced with Cubase as well, because one of the features of '4' is the ability to use hardware effect processors like VST's. Gotta like that.

OK... so, I need to start planning my attack on the L&M Guitar program, and as today is Monday. I'll start over on DVD #1 tonight.

Have a massage booked for 4 pm. That should be nice :) One of those neuromuscular types DEEP deep massage, hurts so damned good.

Ordered some sample CD's off of ebay... on March 27th. I've emailed the Jerk and he's not responded to a single email. So I've started the paypal process to get my dough back or at least get the arse to respond and tell me if he's mailed them.

This will house my new amplifer. I've rented a number of tube amps from Long and McQuade and really wasn't pleased with them.

This will be the real deal No IC's and not PC boards.

Man I love the sounds of this thing. I removed the pups like I planned sprayed the inside of the pup cavity with a nickel based conductive paint for shielding... cost me $30 for the can and there's lots left over. Have to make sure I sprayed enough so that the entire pickguard area was covered as well.

The back of the pickguard was covered with a copper foil I bought cut specifically for this purpose and then the overwound pups and the aforementioned wiring was installed. I had a local guitar tech do it as I was pressed for time. He did a great job and it only cost me an extra fee bucks

Position 2 and 4 are quiet... depending on the effects... they are DEAD quiet, and sound fantastic. I'm loving the crystal clear tones (with a bit of a rounded edge) from pos 4.

I would HIGHly recommend this to anyone sick of the hum, but in love with the Strat.

The meaning of life

How's that for a title. First off I have no idea. But I must say I do enjoy the journey. Yeah there are ups and downs. Good days, bad days, bad drivers :o) But overall I'm not really intersted in the alternative.

Why are we here? Who created what, or created us, or what set of circumstances existed to allow just the right conditions for our development? I dunno (good dodge eh?). But we are here, and I guess we should make the best of it.... Focus on postives, ride out the bad spots. Having support from a partener, a family makes this adjustment/growth possible with much greater ease. But you also have to be there for them. It's give and take, 70% to 30% one day and 30% to 70% another.

Now, given the fact that we are here, I believe there are certain inevitabilities or personal responsibilities that we should come to terms with in order to provide a life (for lack of a better term) for ourselves.

I believe the first thing we must understand is that we are unique and if we live our life with some form of kindness, collecting friends along the way, we'll have a pretty good time on this 'journey' maybe even be missed on our departure. We are unique but we are not indespensible. Life will go on when we are not here.

I have 3 wonderful young children, and I take my role as a parent with great interest... it's one of those responsibilities, but it's also a lot of fun and a lot of work. I suppose you could say that I have worked hard to get where I am. But am not where I am without the support of a wonderful family, and an encouraging wife. I'm painfully aware that not everyone has that. I've had long talks with individuals from very nice families that don't feel connected to their families. I know other's who have had terrible family lives but have decided that that was not going to continue and have largely cut ties with their family so as to "start fresh" or begin some personal development without the ties. Perhaps these are ties that bind for some, yet not in a fufilling way. Being away from one's family allows growth without too much interruption, but makes bad days a lot harder. I get along very well with my family, we're sort of spread out across Canada, and I wish I was able to see them all more often, but unfortunately that's not the case.

Most day have a feel... you know what a Monday feels like, and everyone knows the Friday buzz. Wednesday is humpday, when everyone talks of the mid week shuffle, half way through the week. Thursday for some is "almost" Friday and off to the pub they go... or perhaps it's considered "tune up" for the week end. Saturday is cartoon day for the young or culturally challenged. For the large portion of the mind altering substance users, Saturday is a day of sleeping in and doing it again that night. Sunday is a day of rest, a day for laundry and a religious day for some.

I want my (insert product name) build on Tuesday.

New Fender LSR roller nut and Sperzels

Well I've taken the Strat into a guitar tech for the installation of a Fender LSR roller nut and a set of brushed chrome Sperzels. Who cares that they're brushed chrome but they're suppose to be the best for tuners; they certainly feel top notch.

I dropped the guitar off and had a chat with one of the guitar fellow's take a look at it. I was informed that an adjustment to the neck would improve the guitar's playability. There were a few slight bow's and dips in the fretboard profile.

I questioned him about the bridge. Saying that I was considering getting a new one... perhaps a wilkenson. He said the bridge was fine, as a matter of fact, he was adamant that the vintage or 6 screw models was much better then the 2 screw one's, the more modern types. He said they just need to be set up correctly. I was happy to hear this. At least he wasn't just trying to move product out the door, and saved me a few bucks in the process. It also provided me more confidience in his other advise.

Will look forwad to playing this beast soon.

Missing and presumed O.K.

You always loose touch with people over the years. It's expected... not always accepted as some company is perfect and the bonds of good friendship seem so strong. But this loss, does certainly seem inevitable. Friends you spent almost every waking hour with as you grew up from childhood into adolescence fade as your life and theirs revolve around different centers. More often then not, the distance that separates us makes us. We would probably be close friends again if we were physically close. But different cities and different time zones make different realities, even for those who want to keep in touch.

There are those who despise their roots and cannot wait for the day when their freedom results in anonymity. Young adults on the run from a past they cannot loose too quickly, even if they're unsure of the reason why. Perhaps that's why contacts are broken. A chance to shed a skin of past to rid oneself of the ability to remember, or the reminders of who they were or are.

For some of us the path takes us away from home, and like most Canadian's from eastern Canada, this is very true for me. Though I do remember my friends from OHS, UNB, Trebas, and Dalhousie and try often to keep in contact. Kelowna was also a great place to make some really great friends... but some have been lost... and are presumed O.K.

Behringer FCB1010

Just scooped up a Behringer FCB1010 - now the name doesn't sound too exciting. The FCB1010 is a midi foot controller, that can be configured to address and control any device that accepts midi commands. There's to expression pedals and 10 increment-decrement switches. These can also be configured to on/off.

Works very well with Native Instruments Guitar Rig, and also has fully configurred setups for the Behringer V-AMP preamp/amp & effect modeler.

Hi. how the hell are ya?

I've not posted in quite a long time and that's just not right.

Things are going well with the 6 stinged instrument. My guitar lessons have resulted in a marked increase in my understanding of the beast. Last week Bryan, the instructor, had me solo over a chord change... not a big deal to be honest as I've played bass for many years. But it was quite a bit of fun, and to my suprise actually sounded pretty good.

The 18th see's the strat go into the shop for the installation of the Fender Roller Nut. My use or misuse of the whammy bar causes big changes in the tuning. It's actually made it unusable, so I've taken the bar off and don't do no whammy no-mo. I hope this will improve with the new nut.

I hope everyone is in a good headspace right now. Even if you don't believe in the religion of this time of the season, the intended goodwill is something you should invest in, not the rampant commercialism, though it does keep most businesses in the black.

2005 is quickly approaching and although I don't believe in resolutions (even though I know they exist) I'm hoping to make this coming year a success in many ways. With my wife, an exceptional person, I hope to show her how great this feels. With my children, Robin, Miles & Rachel, in our new house; developing it into a healthy and happy home. With my friends, I wish you continued prosperty and growth as a person, all the best through your struggles (clear your mind and gather focus). With my studio space, creating an effective and efficient study and work environment to explore and record. I will also begin my clinical doctorate this year as well, I hope that I find time to do it all and to do it justice.

Wow. It's been crazy lately. Finally in our new house. Still surrounded by boxes and my gear is packed up, but we're in. The move went smoothly, but we've still gotta get back to the rental property and clean. I'm sure I've still got four truck loads (my small toyota) of stuff in it. With the very young kids in tow it wasn't easy over the last month and change to get things packed up and ready for the move.

It will likely take another 6 months to settle in here. Not that there's much to be done... besides the design planning and construction of my basement studio ( oh yeah and the other rooms in the basement ). It just will take at least 6 months to get into a groove here.

Lets see how that works out....

A good friend of mine stated that he wanted to make a guitar. I think that's a fantastic idea, if not a lot of work. Now if you're feeling crafty and want to make your own guitar I certainly wouldn't disuade anyone. I just wish I had the space to create like that. If you do go for it! Maybe I can have one of your masterful creations. Becoming a Luthier is a huge under taking. Maybe just buying select parts and piecing together what you see as ideal is the way to go? You still have the joy of your creation, but don't have to invest a small fortune in tools. Check out:

I'm sure these are old... but I saw them yesterday in Edmonton and it made me laugh out loud.

Following is a list of music stores in town... I think there's more but these are essentially the majors. Mother's is a nice shop but I wish they were open on Sunday and close some other day of the week; us working class stiffs need the shops to avail themselves on the days we have off. Avenue guitars is a cool small shop that's rather dumpy.... come folks clean up once in a while!!! The prices are pretty ok... but if you've read past posts I've compared them with L&M on one item and found them to be too high, with no desire to match prices...

GFS Alnico OVER-WOUND Staggered pickups

I just bought a set of pups for the Strat. Ebay(ish) and the reviews I've read are quite positive. The stock pups in the Strat I have (if indeed they are stock) are not too bad, however the neck position is pretty muddy... as a matter of fact position 2, 4 & 5(very thin) are really the only one's that sound marginally useful.

Here's the Spew from Guitarfetish...

For that round, sweet, fat vintage Strat® tone with plenty of bite - Now OVERWOUND to really dirve an amp. We wound them WAY hotter than vintage, and the bridge pickup about 10% hotter than the rest of the set- it clocks in at 9K, to give you some meat in the bridge position. These brand new GFS "Hot Alnico Staggers" are custom designed to provide all the great vintage tone with enough punch and drive to hang with a humbucker equipped guitar. Going back and forth between these and a "VERY EXPENSIVE" set of "Boutique" pickups it was easy to notice the added sparkle, crystaline clarity and Stevie Ray "swamp" tone with the GFS pickups! These are not lifeles and toneless- as many "overwound" pickups are- these really have the big open vintage tone with some modern bite!

If you want real vintage Strat® tone, but with the modern features like R/w middle pickup, and vacuum impregnated paraffin wax soaking, then these should fit the bill. To give your Strat® some beef, the bridge pickup is wound just a little bit hotter, but not too hot to lose that vintage spank.

I wandered into Avenue Guitars on Whyte Ave the a few days ago... was wondering if they had either a Floyd Rose or a nice Gotoh Wilkenson bridge.... then I saw this Fender LSR Roller Nuts. I've been checking out the whole nut bridge combination trying to determine what would be the best approach and who would give me the best price... or better yet not hose me. I spoke to a fellow there and he showed me the new system that the American Strats now have, the LSR roller nut, locking tuners (on the headstock) and a nice whammy system. Now as long ans you're not going to do dive bombs with this system you're better off. If a string breaks on a Floyd Rose the whole guitar goes out of tune... not a good thing. So I ordered a roller nut... from Long and McQuade for $37 as Avenue Guitars wanted $49.95 and wouldn't match L&M's price. Sorry I have to follow my tendancy to pay less....

So with a new roller nut in... or soon to be in I think I'm gonna get the locking tuners, probably Sperzel brand as they're suppose to be better and the cost is the same as the Fender brand that is made by Gotoh. Then with these in place I'll see if I even need to replace the bridge... I may not have to as I understand it, it's usually the nut that hangs up the strings and causes it to go out of tune moreso then the bridge. We'll see.

I like my Strat... strange hybrid thing that it is... but I don't like the way it warps out of tune if you touch the wammy bar. So I think I will consider hot roding the thang. Now if anyone is reading this and would like to provide me with guidance... I will gladly accept it. I may have to call upon guitarists from bands I've been in, in the past to solicit a response....

I don't think I'm gonna be doing dive bombs or huge whammy bar tricks, but I would rather put a soild bridge on then spending any money at all and no being happy with the results.

Now, a fixed bridge doesn't move, which would be ok... if I didn't fancy the whammy bar upon occasion. A Floyd Rose bridge uses a lock nut which allows you you to "dive bomb" and "pull-up" without fear of going out of tune.

Again the fixed Bridge like the Gotoh Wilkinson bridge is closer to "vintage" in operation. Usually a Wilkinson will employ locking tuning pegs and a graphite nut as part of the setup as well. Each has its own special purpose... The fixed bridge is the most stable, allowing you to use different tunings.

Wots a Floyd 1 and Floyd 2 tremolo?

With a Floyd Rose bridge (Floyd 1), the ball ends are removed and are held by a string holder block, similiar to a vise. This, combined with the lock nut, means the only part of the string being stretched is from nut to bridge.. hence the term "double locking".

A Floyd 2 bridge uses the ball ends of the strings... it's only "single locking", as there is no vise locking system at all. Because of this, sometimes the ball ends can stretch and affect tuning slightly. The Floyd Rose 2 is a less expensive and maintainance friendly bridge....

This is a fantastic page that does the math for you and provides you with a "plan" on building your QRD. Complete with the bandwidth of the QRD, very nice indeed...and it you want to convert your cm to inch without thinking....

Or you can use the following explaination on designing your QRD. This method considers the wall to be a flat surface with varying impedance according to location. This is accomplished using wells of various specific depths arranged in a periodic sequence based on residues of a quadratic function.

where s_n is the sequence of relative depths of the wells, n is a number in the sequence of non-negative consecutive integers {0, 1, 2, 3 ...} denoting the well number, and p is a non-negative odd prime number.

For example, for modulo 17, the series is

The actual depths of the wells are dependent on the design wavelength of the diffuser. In order to calculate these depths, Schroeder suggests the function

The widths of these wells w should be constant and small compared to the design wavelength
(no greater than DF / 2; Schroeder suggests 0.137 * DF)

Quadratic Residue Diffusor

Recall these sound scattering devices are generally placed on the rear wall to the listening position(when the listening position is not close) so as to diffuse or scatter the waveforms that would return or bounce back to the listener.... These are one of the most effecttive rear wall diffusers across the largest range of frequencies. They can also be placed on side walls and above the listening position.

They are designed utilizing quadratic residue number theory, the math shows us that there will be equal energy in the diffractional directions which depends on the number of wells and how wide they are. The bandwidth depends on the deepest and narrowest wells. The scattered energy assumes the form of a hemidisc.

This is based upon the principle of reflection-phase grating - The scientist who pioneered the ideas responsible for this development is Manfred R. Schroeder of the University of Göttingen in Germany. In the 1970s, Schroeder and two collaborators undertook a major acoustical study of more than 20 famous European concert halls. One of their findings was that listeners like the sound of long, narrow halls better than that of wide halls. Perhaps the reason for this, Schroeder reasoned, is related to another finding that listeners prefer to hear somewhat different signals at each of their two ears.

Schroeder discovered that number theory can be used to determine the ideal depth of the notches, resulting in an acoustic grating that's analogous to diffraction gratings used to scatter light.

One effective acoustic grating is based on quadratic-residue sequences. Such a sequence consists of the remainders, or residues, after squaring consecutive whole numbers, then dividing them by a given prime number.

Suppose, for example, the given prime number is 17. The first sequence member is the remainder, or residue, after the first number, 1, is squared and divided by 17. The answer is 1. Squaring all the numbers from 1 to 16, then dividing by 17 and determining the residue, produces the sequence: 1, 4, 9, 16, 8, 2, 15, 13, 13, 15, 2, 8, 16, 9, 4, 1. For larger numbers, the pattern simply repeats itself.

Finding the depth of a given grating well involves multiplying the appropriate number in the sequence by the longest wavelength for which the grating is designed to scatter sound efficiently and then dividing by a factor that depends on the well's numerical position. Mathematical analysis shows that for such an arrangement, the spectrum of energies scattered into different directions is essentially flat, meaning that roughly equal amounts of energy go in all directions. This is a nice step by step on making some wall panels... one thing I would change is to fill the panels with mineral wool. Much denser and better sound absoptive TL's (tansmission loss) accross the frequency range. Would improve upon the panels for sure.

Based on what I can read about the guitar... it seems they should have a rosewood neck... and no mention of squire (large or small print) on the headstock. So as this is a pawn shop score, it may be that the maple neck is from some other Guitar... or the metal plate securing the neck to the body is the odd piece out and was added later. Hard to know...

The wood used to make Fender® guitars and basses have a direct influence on the way the guitar sounds. Here is a breakdown of the different tones you can expect, depending on the type of wood used:

(a.) Alder: full and rich, with fat low-end, nice cutting mids, and good overall warmth and sustain. Alder is generally considered to be one of the "traditional" Stratocaster® body woods.

(b.) Ash: exhibits a "snappier" tone with a bright edge, but with a warm bass and long sustain. It is often considered as the other "traditional" Stratocaster® body wood.

(c.) Poplar: one of the softer hardwoods, nicely resonant with a meaty tone. Many guitar manufacturers as a substitute for alder are using this wood, as it is quite similar in tone.

(d.) Basswood: the principal wood used on most Japanese-made instruments. This is due both to its tonal response, (once again, very similar to Alder) as well as the fact that Basswood is much more readily available to the manufacturers in Asia.

(e.) Mahogany: deep warm mids, good sustain and nice "bite"

(f.) Maple: punchy, bright, and has a nice bite on the high end. Often used only as a laminated top instead of an entire body, as it tends to be a particularly heavy wood.

I'm going to take a good look at doing some modifications on my Strat. I bought it used at a pawn shop in Kelowna, British Columbia years ago. I've always had desire to have a nice Strat with a rosewood neck... but this one is maple, and I must say I'm very happy with it. The thing is stock and made in Korea but plays very very well, I have to say as good as a friends American made Strat.

I read somewhere on the internet that the difference between an American made and a Mexican (or Korean I assume) is largely the hardware.

Same RazorBack QRD different view

This gives a great 3D view of the Razorback QRD. This is a variation on a classic diffusor design intended to reduce the effect of the modal responses in a room. You may notice that there are holes or gaps in the construction (the black rectangles) that are filled with sound absorptive material. Diffusor's are designed to alter sound wave signal paths, changing the direction of the sound from the back of the studio toward the mix position. But making the sound bounce in different directions away from the mix position you end up with an improvment in the quality of the sound at this critical position. Sound that find it way to this postion after it hits a diffusor and other absoprtive surfaces in the studio is weaking in intensity and therefore less of a consern to the engineer/producer. Now the mix position has intended signal coming from the speakers, and less effect from the room.

Another look at QRD's

Now these are made out of plywood and MDF. I'm certain the construction would not be difficult.

8 inches in depth and 2 feet by 4 feet. I think a couple of these on the back wall would do wonders for the sound. I'll consider installing them into the walls as well as having some nice low frequency absorbers on the same wall.

Similar to this design is the kit by Decware that can be purchased online; and also can be purchased assembled. They even have a set of plans for a smaller version that you can download (after purchase of a non-expiring password).

I've been trying to wrap my head around how to create a great mixing space. How big do I realy want the studio space to be? We've got over 1000 square feet to play in, but I really don't want to eat it all up. I want to also build a nice media room for the television and recreactional activities... a place to play games and let the kids have fun.

Back to the studio though... It is imperative that the room feel comfortable for at least 3 people to work in. The demensions are key to having a great sounding critical listening environment. Based on the work of Trevor J Cox and Peter D'Antonio. Determining Optimum Room Dimensions for Critical Listening Environments: A New Methodology. Proc 110th Convention AES. paper 5353 (2000) Cox & D'Antonio are from RPG.

Cox and D'Antonio have shown that there are very few room ratios (about 20 clustered around 1:2.19:3) that can be applied to a range of room volumes (50 - 200 m3). This is because room ratios are generally not scaleable. The ratios robust to room size were:

With these ratio's in hand I'm pretty much stuck until I begin the constructin phase. I cannot "nail" down demensions yet as I will have to consider how much vertical room I will have in the house. The floating floor will have 1/2 inch EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene ) rubber to float on. This is similar to Neoprene but does not have the same oil resistance characteritics and has a 3 to 5 times longer life span then Neoprene. You can also use SBR but that has about a 10 year life span... so that's even less then Neoprene.

There's gonna have to be some serious study around this as these ratio's result in a room larger then I want to build.... Consider an 8 foot room would have a 17.28 foot width and an 23.68 foot length.

Keep in mind this is a purely rectangle room. No use of Diffusion or altering the angles of the walls and ceiling. This will help a lot in dealing with the modes that are build up in rooms... and this of course will allow for a much different sized room.

I started playing my Stratocastor lately...

I've contacted a local referral service for guitar teachers and have myself lined up for lessons begining in September. Still not sure what I want an instructor to show me... I need to practice more but I think it would be interesting to work in some Jazz....

I've been plugging my Strat into my computer (via the audiophile 24/96) and processing it with Native Instruments Guitar Rig. I've pretty impressed with this; actually sounds very nice, and no extra noise from my big muff pie... though there's something magical about that distortion.

... maybe some guitar will creep into the tracks soon...

Health Canada proposes to create a series of health warnings using different approaches and messages tailored to particular needs, such as smokers with low literacy skills, potential quitters and hard-core smokers, that would be rotated every two years.... There is an estimated five million Canadians are smokers.

I wonder what that will look like? I also wonder if it will help deter those from starting to smoke... I used to smoke and occassionally with have a cigarrette or, even better, a cigar but I don't think I could ever be classed as a hard-core smoker.

I've seen too many folks now with the work I do with cancer that it really makes me think a little bit more... suppose that's a good thing for me.

Hey... how's it?

My head has been totally wrapped up in the new house. We had our official walk through yesterday, get to "inspect" the place with the construction supervisor. I've been through that house so many times as I've been a tad curious about every aspect of the place. It was a first for Karen though so she was happy to finally walk it and peak at the future abode.

I've been super preoccupied with the basement. It is where I will construct a critical listening mixing room. It's been a lot of fun doing the research and the reading. I've done this once before in the house on Mountainview in Kelowna BC, but this will far surpass that one. I intend to float the floor so as to really isolate the room from the rest of the house.

I've been getting lots of information from John Sayers website. As well as the SAE website... and numerous other sites... but these two alone have LOTS of valuable information.

Monday I was out and found a source for the Rubber I will need to float the floors... I'll also be using it at every possible junction that needs isolation to insure as much independance structure...

A blog. My friend Chris showed me this site. Looks interesting. Perhaps it's something that will be of interest as we put the bits of our EP together.

It's early Saturday, I'm on my 3rd cup of coffee and begining to feeling somewhat animated now; almost alive. I took a few more pictures of the house we're having built here in Alberta. It looks like it's going to be a nice place. Certainly larger than any of the previous apartments and homes we've bought or rented... Halifax, Kelowna, Burnaby. I've been researching the construction of a recording/mixing room that I will construct in the basement. Really looking forward to a permanent place for the mass of musical machismo machines I've collected... I'll post some links in the next blog entry or two.
